- Description:
- Page 61 of the folder.||Consists of correspondence of E.T. Kehrer with AFL-CIO Civil Rights Department Director William Pollard. Topics include the Civil Rights Department's work on equal opportunity hiring for the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway project and reports on strike and boycott efforts against J.P. Stevens textile corporation.||The records, 1964-1979, of the Southern Office of the AFL-CIO Civil Rights Department consist primarily of correspondence and related reports, surveys, statements, and newspaper clippings. Much of the correspondence is between Director E.T. (Al) Kehrer and various AFL-CIO departments, notably his superiors Don Slaiman (1965-1974) and William Pollard (1974-1979). There is also substantial correspondence between Kehrer and the AFL-CIO state and city labor councils in the South; apprenticeship and training programs; a wide range of groups and persons concerned with community action and social reform issues, principally in the field of civil rights; and political figures.

- issue is adding wood to the fire in that voting districts within the county being changed have given Allendale a 80% black section previously white. Two County officials, (whites) are not running for re-election after some years in office. Last September a black woman was fired at Kaysor-Roth two days after announcing her desire to run for county treasurer. I have arranged to introduce Delores Hagler to NAACP rep. in Allendale and to make just a few more black visits on some people I have already contacted and feel may sign. She of course is reluctant, as she is aware of the Allendale situation but she will follow me in my car and I will know where she is at all times. Bob Ross may go down with me but I feel it is imperative that I be seen after Thursdays incident, one reason why I sat in Piggly-Wiggly parking lot for a while Sat. to meet committee member. However if at all possible I feel it would be safe to have to organizers together when possible in Allendale. As you can see by the report this week I got 5 more cards this week, one however is a resign. [The workers are] There is probably more to be said about Allendale but you are probably more than aware of the conditions and attitudes around Allendale, but Phil & you requested a report. I hope this is helpful. BLB
