Even before facing competition from the film industry, most American theaters struggled to remain financially solvent. But as traditional stage productions gave way to moving picture shows, theaters in Georgia faced widespread closure and forced relocation. Accidental fires and racially targeted arson destroyed some theaters that were already at risk. Other venues took steps to survive by looking for new revenue or sharing stages with struggling theater groups. After a century of widespread financial uncertainty, some theaters turned to the work of restoration and preservation, ensuring that historic sites would have a long-standing future.
