Community theater first developed in America out of the “Little Theatre” movement, which aimed to perform (and often create) plays based around the life and identity of a community. Moving away from big commercial productions, community theater makes theater more accessible to people in rural areas and more intimate for those living in large cities. The productions of community theaters often reflect the value of the communities they serve. Both professional and amateur groups bring communities together to express, affirm, and define shared identities.
